Frida Kahlo is one of the most famous painters from Mexico and her life story is fascinating. She suffered from polio as a young child and then was severely injured in a bus accident in which her pelvis and hip were damaged.
After her accident she started painting while confined to her bed in a body bandage. I have always been drawn to her work, I remember seeing her paintings in an exhibition at the Tate Modern many many years ago. I didn’t know anything about her back then, but was instantly attracted to her work. Her paintings vividly illustrate the physical and psychological pain, as well as the isolation that she suffered.
She also created many famous self-portraits. I love her work because it is so bold and honest. Frida was politically involved, outspoken and she managed to create all of this wonderful art during her life ordeals which included a very stormy marriage and multiple miscarriages. She was a woman who wasn’t afraid to show the dirty, pretty things that make up human existence.
